Too many choices? We can help!
In a world where we make countless decisions every day, the sheer number of choices can feel overwhelming. And sometimes it's difficult to determine what to read... what to watch...
Luckily, our librarians are passionate, an untapped wealth of knowledge, and vastly well-read. Let them help. They love guiding readers toward great books and resources.

Discover Books On Your Own
Want to feel empowered? Do you know about NoveList yet? Want to take on the discovery process on your own?
Novelist is a database that allows readers to search for their favourite authors or titles, and find others of similar interest. Users can browse theme-oriented book lists at every reading level through Explore Fiction, and look for outstanding titles in Best Fiction.
Explore NoveList! A subscription fiction database that provides you with genre information, reviews, annotations, “read-a-likes”, discussion questions and much more for over 120,000 fiction titles. It's like having your very own Public Service Librarian. And library card holders can access it FOR FREE!
Access NoveList --> Use In Library | Use Outside Library
(If you are accessing this database remotely, be sure to have your library card number handy.)
Freedom To Read Week
Some of the most controversial books in history are now regarded as classics. During Freedom to Read Week (Feb 22 - 28, 2026) we're celebrating our right to read and this space that encourages and supports that.
Join in the fun! Here are some of the things we're up to:
- Book Display of "Banned Books" (or challenged books)
- Selfie Station where you can grab a selfie with your favourite "challenged book" from our display
- FTR buttons -- grab a couple and show off your freedom to read pride
- Trivia contest for prizes
- Grab a new "Read Dangerously" library card if you need one
Freedom To Read FOR LIFE
We believe that FREEDOM TO READ is for life!
"As a librarian, lately I've gotten a lot of questions about whether it's hard, standing up to challenges to our collections, programs, and even our existence. And I can say, I have never been more proud or more honoured to do what I do. These are dark days for democracy, and libraries, and freedom of speech and ideas, and I cannot believe my luck that my role right now is to stand up for these things. It is not always easy, but it is always worthwhile, and I will always love it." - Shauna Costache | Public Service Supervisor
We remain a strong advocate for inclusivity in our reading choices. This annual event encourages Canadians to think about and reaffirm their commitment to intellectual freedom.
Reading Challenges
Sometimes reading needs a little boost. Each year our Public Service Librarians create seasonal reading challenges for grown-ups, to give your reading a kickstart and to offer fun incentives (like prizes). You'll find those here, as well as in the Adult Programming and Calendar List areas.
Staff Picks
The staff here at SPL are avid readers and we are always eager to share our favourite titles! And our Public Service Librarians are constantly curating amazing book displays and special book list recommendations. Discover lists that our librarians are creating and approving for our reader. There are lists there from the other PCIN Libraries, as well.
