AI & Hiring: What Small Businesses Need to Know

Hiring has always been one of the hardest parts of running a small business. AI has changed it again, and not always for the better.

Your candidates are using AI to write their résumés and cover letters. Many of those tools read your job posting, social media posts, and website first to tailor the application. That means what you put online shapes who applies. At the same time, a growing number of AI platforms promise to screen candidates automatically. Some are useful. Others are built on pattern matching that quietly bakes in bias, and a few likely run afoul of human rights protections in Canada.

Amanda Cupido is an award-winning communications advisor, TEDx speaker and post-exit entrepreneur. Her podcast company, Lead Podcasting, was acquired by The Walrus in 2025. Her books Let’s Talk Podcasting and Let’s Talk Podcasting for Kids have inspired people around the world to embrace the medium for close to a decade.

Amanda has a passion for the intersection of innovation, leadership and storytelling. As an adjunct professor at Seneca Polytechnic and Toronto Metropolitan University, she is known for developing new course curriculum and trailblazing the educational approach to podcasting, generative AI and digital entrepreneurship. 

Previously, she worked as a radio producer, reporter and news anchor. Most notably, she was the first woman to be a program director at a talk radio station in Toronto.
