The library will reopen Tues-Sat beginning on Jan 25. Until then we will continue to offer curbside service at the back door.

Engineering Science Quest: Space Force (Grades 4-6)

Blast off into Space with ESQ (Engineering Science Quest) and explore what is beyond our world. Participants will engage in various STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) topics such as circuity, coding, physics, and astronomy through hands-on activities. They will uncover the secrets of the universe and step into the boots of a NASA engineer to design and build their own space systems, create cool circuits, and more!

Each of these exciting events is run as an interactive YouTube stream. Some weeks, you can pick up a take-home activity kit from the library and everything in it is yours to keep!

Alien Arrival - Mon. Feb. 14th
Design and Build - Kit
Design and build a shock-absorbing lander to protect astronauts during impact on Earth after coming back from their space mission. Participants will learn about shock-absorption and stability during this activity, while also having the freedom to be creative with their lander designs.

The Maxwell- Mon. Mar. 21st
Circuit - Kit
Create a paper helicopter model of the X-57 Maxwell (an experimental aircraft being developed by NASA) that lights up. This activity demonstrates how the actual X-57 Maxwell is circuited and powered using only batteries.

Red Rover Red Rover - Mon. Apr. 11th
Instructional - Kit
Build a cardboard rover powered by rubber bands to simulate the rovers NASA uses to explore space surfaces, such as Mars and the Moon!

A New Martian Friend - Wed. May 4th
Coding -- NO Kit
Investigate how to train a computer through machine learning to help communicate with an alien so he can give out some materials that are needed on Mars. This will be done using a modified version of Scratch.

This program is presented in partnership with ESQ from the University of Waterloo and is undertaken with the financial support of the Canadian Space Agency (CSA).
